In Chinese medicine, cooking and eating is very important and considered essential to life support. In ancient China, the medical system was rather directed at preventing disease than suppressing symptoms or bodily functions.
I’ve learned that Sun Si Miao’s works include recommendations for daily living, implying the importance of diet, exercise, and work. He suggested that dietary therapy should be applied first, and prior to the use of herbs.
Today, as we are going through these difficult times, we should remember to treat ourselves well; we should cook and eat healthy food, we should strengthen the body’s defenses—defense qi, lung qi, and kidney qi—especially when emotionally insecure or anxious.
Cinnamon, ginger, chili, curry, and all warming foods are good for you now. Aniseed, cardamom, coriander, parsley, rosemary—it’s easy to put some of these in your food every day.
